The Youth Music Festival (northern edition) began yesterday at Queen’s Hall, St Ann’s, where pupils from secondary schools in the northern region opened five days of competition. The National Music Festival—incorporating competitions for children, youth and adults—was last staged in 2012 and, being a biennial event, should have taken place in 2014, but challenges in securing sponsorship and other issues caused the Trinidad and Tobago Music Festival Association (TTMFA) to forgo the festival last year. The TTMFA is now working towards having it return in 2016.
In the interim, the association decided to hold mini youth music festivals in Port of Spain and San Fernando so that pupils who will be graduating from secondary school this year will have an opportunity to compete in and experience at least some of what the National Music Festival offers
