The Marionettes Christmas Jubilee began with the senior choir giving a rousing rendition of Vaughan Williams’ “Let all the world in every corner sing” to start the concert last Friday, in the Queen’s Hall with the true spirit of joy at Christmastide.
Jacqueline Smith and the senior choir next gave a good performance of “Laudate Dominum” from Mozart’s “Visperae solennes de confessore”. The Junior Choir joined their elders to sing “For the beauty of the earth” by British composer John Rutter the favoured composer of the evening, judging by the number of his compositions in the programme.
Then came one of the highlights (for this member of the audience) of the evening, the premier of “There was a man sent by God” by Dr Roger Henry, a setting of verses from the first chapter of the Gospel according to St John, performed by the senior choir with soloists sopranos Hermina Charles and Patrice Inglesbirth and baritone Garfield Washington. I would like to hear this again and perhaps again fully to be able to appreciate this new work.
